But after about 100 days of texting and emailing the OpenAI CEO for an interview--with no response, he claims, and with financiers hounding him to make good on his original pitch--Lough was at his wit's end. He'd exhausted just about every angle.

Annie Altman, the sister of OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman, has sued her brother accusing him of sexually assaulting her when she was a minor. In a complaint filed this week with a Missouri federal court, Annie Altman alleges her older brother committed "numerous acts of rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse, molestation, sodomy, and battery" from 1997 to 2006, with the abuse starting when she was only three years old. In a joint statement he made alongside his mother and two younger brothers, Sam Altman said "all of [Annie's] claims are utterly untrue." The Altmans say they've tried to support Annie in "many ways" over the years, including by offering direct financial assistance. My sister has filed a lawsuit against me.

OpenAI in 2019 signed a nonbinding agreement to spend $51 million on the chips when they became available, according to a copy of the deal and Rain disclosures to investors this year seen by WIRED. Rain told investors Altman had personally invested more than $1 million into the company.

Altman cofounded OpenAI with Elon Musk in 2015 as a nonprofit and served as the CEO for the for-profit arm since 2019. He was originally fired from OpenAI over "a breakdown in communication between Sam and the board," according to an internal staff memo. Several key members also resigned, including co-founder Greg Brockman (who will now also join Microsoft) along with a few senior researchers.

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) has been developing a new AI framework, which would "deliver transparent, responsible AI while not stifling critical and cutting edge innovation."

Now, Altman will answer questions from a Senate Judiciary subcommittee, acting as a quasi-industry spokesman for companies racing ahead to deploy chatbots and other tools to the public, including Google and Microsoft. Topics are likely to include the risks of AI, competition in the industry and how government should handle it -- and maybe even whether robots are going to kill us all.
